Have you been mislead to about the health benefits of canola oil?
If you have been looking through the diet recipes on this site you’ll notice that canola oil is never used as an ingredient. I’ve had a few emails asking why this is as they’ve been hearing in main stream media that canola oil is in fact a “heart healthy” source of mono-unsaturated fat similar to olive oil.
The dirty truth
Yes, canola oil is high in mono-unsaturated fat but I’ll go into detail as to why canola oil is anything but “healthy”.
It typically ranges between 55-65% mono-unsaturated fat and between 28-35% polyunsaturated fat and just a tiny amount of saturated fat. While we’ve been led to believe that mono-unsaturated fats are good for us (which they are in virgin olive oil that has not been processed from nuts and seeds), the fact is that canola oil has more bad stuff than good stuff.
One of the biggest problems with highly processed vegetable oils such as corn oil, soybean oil and canola oil is that the polyunsaturated component of the oil is highly unstable under heat, light and pressure which results in a heavy oxidization of the polyunsaturates. This leads to oils in your body that are highly inflammatory in your body when you ingest them potentially contributing to weight gain, heart disease and a range of other degenerative diseases.
The reason why extra virgin olive oil is good for you is because during the extraction process it is cold pressured without the use of heat and other solvents. It also contains important antioxidants that protect the stability of the oil.
On the other hand, canola oil is usually extracted and refined with high amounts of heat, pressure and petroleum solvents like hexane. The usual process for producing canola oil involves caustic refining, degumming, bleaching, and deoderization all using questionable chemicals and high heat.
The truly healthy oils:
- Extra virgin olive oil – Used as a healthy salad dressing oil or with cooking at low temperatures.
- Virgin coconut oil – Excellent for all temperatures of cooking due to its high stability under immense heat.
- Organic grass-fed butter – This is a great source of healthy fat, CLA which has been shown in studies to have muscle building and fat burning properties.
Don’t be fooled by misleading food labels claiming that they contain “healthy canola oil” – instead choose one of the healthier alternatives above!
